During my stay at the Aplenhorn, I had the pleasure of staying in the Edelweiss room and Primrose room, both lovely, inviting, charming and so relaxing. The views from the balconies were my favorite place to start my day, being at one with nature, while the sweet aroma of homemade breakfast crept it's way into the room and made me instantly hungry for the incredible culinary creations from innkeeper, Johann. A full gourmet breakfast is made and served every morning by Johann that is not only delicious, but inventive, fresh, surprising and homemade, right down to the freshly baked scones. Over breakfast, which consisted of overnight oats, yogurt and fruit, ghost chile bacon, mushroom omlet, homemade blackberry orange scone, Ethiopian coffee and cold-pressed orange juice, Johann and Evelyn, give the best recommendations for the day ahead, depending on what kinds of activities you're feeling up for. Per their recommendation, I ventured off to Castle Rock Trail that took me on a strenuous 2.5 miles up the mountain to some breathtaking views of the lake and trees followed by a great lunch in town. After a day of adventuring, I took advantage of one of my favorite parts of the Alpenhorn, the jacuzzi tub. Innkeeper, Evelyn, makes homemade lavender bath salts for each guest's stay putting that extra special touch into everything the Alpenhorn stands for. Every evening, gourmet hors d'oeuvres and libations are served over delightful conversation with other guests and the innkeepers, swapping stories of the days' adventures and Johann's South African roots.
If you're lucky enough to stay at the Alpenhorn B&B during a Thursday or Saturday, which you absolutely and definitely should, Johann creates a three course, five star, gourmet dinner served with three wine pairings for a mere $35. When I say this is the most delicious food I've ever had, I'm not joking. So fresh, homemade, gourmet and flat out incredible. The menu changes every dinner and is always new and inventive. Following hors d'oeuvres, the first course, a butternut squash soup with homemade ancient grain bread paired with a South African Chenin Blanc was served. The main course was then served, a roasted lamb with mint jelly, roasted asparagus and twice baked potatoes, paired with a South African Glenelly Cabarnet Sauvignon. Finally came the dessert course, a Baked Malva Pudding with cream and ice cream, the most popular South African baked dessert, paired with a Frisk Prickly Riesling from Austrailia. Needless to say, I went to bed a very happy camper that night. And to top it off, I was so fortunate to have met some great new people and locals at the Alpenhorn. This was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast and it has truly set the bar extremely high for any of my future travels. There's something so unique and intimate about a stay at the Alpenhorn Bed and Breakfast Inn and I will come back often to visit. It quickly felt like home with what came to feel like family and it was such a special experience.
